Richard's Diary - 2008

13/11/08 This will be my last newsletter this year.  I am really pleased to announce that we have added some new stock of large carp and golden tench this week and some pictures are on the Gallery page.  I have also been putting up some new shelters by the swims on the far bank for next season.  I now have six swims which are detailed on a separate page and will give details of fish caught there next season. Look forward to reporting next year.

30/10/08 October has had mixed weather.  Our day ticket customers caught a variety of silver fish.  The Carp seem to have been diving under during the cold spells but I managed to catch a beauty this week over on the far bank.  It was one of my originals - dark orange in colour and long and slender - approximately 16/18lb.  I caught it on some new boilies that I bought two weeks ago - a new company called Irish Country Cream.  Would certainly recommend them.

27/09/08 Our visitors in September enjoyed catching a variety of fish including a PB - a linear weighing in at 28lb!!  Thats our best lake ever this year and Rick was absolutely thrilled.  Who knows what else is in the lake at Kervinic. That's a challenge for the keen fisherman!! See his picture in our Gallery!!  The latest spell of warm weather has brought many carp to the surface basking in the shallows including all the larger ones ranging from 15lb to 25lb.  Visitors last week caught a 5/6lb pike on live bait, bream, tench and some of my newer carp.  At present they seem to prefer maggot, worm, sweetcorn and dog biscuits. I have been busy building new platforms on the nearside bank with steps making that area more accessible for next season.

26/08/08 The floating island has been a great success and is already very green!!  The carp I bought in the autumn have doubled their weight and are a good size now.  They are very different to my original species, being a lot shorter and fatter.  I caught three beauties yesterday - mirrors and commons - and some very nice rudd.  Good size too. At the moment, sweetcorn seems to be the favourite bait.  Aren't fish fickle!!!  Our day ticket fishermen seem to be having mixed fortunes.  The weather is a key factor in fishing and a cold spell can change the days catch.

24/06/08 The floating island is in progress now and should be ready to launch by the end of June.  This will give a hiding place for small fish and a landing area for local ducks.  We have built a jetty at the west end which looks down the length of the lake and our next project is a stock pond to bring on the smaller carp.

30/05/08 At last the spawning season seems to be over and we are catching carp again.  I had 4 in one morning, the largest being between 16lb and 20lb.  Another fought very hard and as I was getting ready to land it, it snapped my swivel!!!  Has that ever happened to anyone else??  I would be interested to know as I thought swivels were indestructible. In June we are building an island which will add dimension to the lake.  Watch this space for up-to-date news!!

16/05/08 In the middle of May the very warm weather has seen the carp swimming near the surface in shoals of between 10 and 15 fish in a variety of sizes.  The larger carp seem to prefer to be on their own and have been topping constantly.  I was delighted to catch several bream, the largest being 5lb, a tench which was over 6lb and a 11/2lb perch. Not bad for a non-float fisherman. Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me!!

15/04/08 After a very warm spell in the middle of April, the spawning season started and went on hold with another few days downpours.

08/03/08 The weather deteriorated and the downpours which followed in March put the dampers on things.  As there was so much rain, if proved very difficult to catch anything over this period.

05/02/08 In February we had a very warm spell and I was catching a variety of fish with some large carp over 20lb.  I was also catching some of the carp stock which I had put in our lake last October.  They are a lot paler than my carp which are very dark brown and orange.  The new stock of boillies helped which I bought from Catcherbaits.  The most successful have been Strawberry, Coconut Cream and Luncheon boillies.
